Gran Canaria (Spain) - November/December 2001

As during my earlier visit in April this year (link in Photo Album Contents page), I stayed in an attractive self-catering apartment at Playa del Inglés. The weather was perhaps a degree or two cooler than it had been earlier in the year and was in the range 15-23º C; there were even a couple of days of [reasonably welcome] rain, but overall the weather was very pleasant. My stay this time was for two weeks, rather than one as before, and I even managed to walk one-way across the famed Maspalomas dunes, although as I have walked in desert situations many times before (in Morocco, the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa), I don't feel it's something I'll have to repeat soon.

This is the Faro de Maspalomas (Lighthouse) at the Maspalomas end of the dunes. The freshwater lagoon close by, barely two feet above sea-level and separated from the sea by no more than 20 metres of sand, is quite impressive and surprisingly remains relatively unspoiled, given the proximity of a major bathing beach along the shores of the dunes.
Another visit to the pretty village of Puerto de Mogán, on the southwest coast. I had an excellent lunch again, this time in a German-run restaurant near the fishing harbour part of the port - main dish was some very good deep-sea bass, a real treat. The photograph shows the Harbour Office, taken with zoom from across the harbour at the far end of the fishing quay
