La Baule (France) - May 1999

Located on the southern coast of Brittany, La Baule is a sophisticated beach and health resort.

The Bay of La Baule from the apartment where I stayed. Horses riding on the beach are a common sight here in the early morning and early evening.
Part of the Ramparts of Guérande, a few miles west of La Baule.
No connection with La Baule really; this just caught my imagination. Robert Surcouf was a late-17th/early-18th century corsair (aka 'pirate') who hailed from St Malo on the northern Brittany coast and who brigandised British ships in the Indian Ocean before returning home to St Malo where he became an armaments manufacturer.
